On Environmental Mitigaton

On June 28 MainPower's managing director, Allan Berge, said that "there would be minor or no adverse ecological impacts of the development  and the long-term impact was likely to be positive because of measures proposed to manage and mitigate the effects of the wind farm"

MainPower says that it will mitigate the effect of digging up 365,000 cu m of the most outstanding area of limestone forest left in Canterbury.

(1)  by propogating seed from the many endangered species
DOC scientists have found that the planting and translocation of plants is very difficult and expensive.

How will MainPower do this?  Who are their experts? Is their claim more than wishful thinking?

(2)  by replanting damaged areas with native plants
Once destroyed, the complex relationship between limestone and plant communities will be  gone for ever.

MainPower's promise to mitigate the damage it will do is a public relations exercise, lacking  substance.

To  put wind turbines on the ridge between Mt Cass and Totara Trig would be an act of environmental vandalism.
